WHAT IS COLON CANCER?

Colorectal cancer is cancer found in the large intestine and rectum. In most cases, colorectal cancer develops from small growths called polyps, which can be detected and removed during a routine screening.
 
Not all polyps are dangerous, but they should be removed to make sure there is no cancer present, and/or prevent the conversion of a polyp into a cancer.

COLONOSCOPY: THE GOLD STANDARD

The GOLD STANDARD of preventing, detecting and removing pre-cancerous colon polyps is a colonoscopy.

 During a colonoscopy, your gastroenterologist uses a scope to look at the inside of your colon for polyps or evidence of cancer. This screening takes no less than 15-45 minutes. 


Should You Get Screened? 

For most people, colorectal cancer does not cause symptoms until the later stages, making regular screening vital to prevention and diagnosis. 

Anyone can get colon cancer, but certain factors can increase your risk. If you meet any ONE of these criteria or are experiencing symptoms, talk to your Gastro Clinic of ADM physician about getting screened.

  • If you are age 45 or older
  • A family history of colorectal cancer or polyps
  • ​History of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)
